my united states of whatever

Petra visited during spring break a few months ago to take these photos for Oyster and we were way in our own world and it was so pretty and kind of like Heavenly Creatures without the murder and stuff. You can see the spread here, where I also wrote a little bit, but these are my favorites, and I happen to be looking down in almost all of them! It was just really satisfying to make a thing with someone whose brain is similar when it comes to colors/the various subcategories of suburban homes' doors' windows/points of inspiration/etc. and feel slightly less crazy for being obsessive over all those details. In general, I guess, it can be isolating to realize your world is very different from that around you and it's easy to decide whenever there's some conflict that it's because you yourself are too strange and your point-of-view is too twisted, but it makes it all the more comforting and exciting to find someone who kind of feels or sees the way you do in some way or another. Man, whoever invented friendship was really smart.
And, as it goes without saying, Petra is ridiculously talented and makes everything look 2903x prettier. Normally I don't post press stuff on here (especially since I rarely post here at all anymore) but I feel that I can take credit for more than just standing there this time and I am psyched at how it turned out.
Also, HAPPY ROAD TRIP KICK-OFF! If you don't know what I'm talking about, read this, and then look at this!
(Here's the poster for it. Also of me by Petra from when she visited. It felt a little weird making it MY FACE but it's blurry and sunsetty and American and a pretty photo so shrug.)

Zoé said...

I really like the little worlds and films you create and approach sometimes. There are hundreds of stories happening within your images and words... I wonder what these stories mean to you.

There is always something admirable and delicately alluring about your posts - the way they hark back to other times (this makes me think of the 1960s with a 1950s hue) paired with the appealing charm and beauty of the photos.

Makes me sad because real life can't always be this pretty though I know I give it a good chance to try.

In the first photograph there is something very angelic about your ensemble, your hair and the scenery... in many ways, it is quite disturbing, but I love the daisy coat (Where do you find things like that?!)and think that pairing it with the delightful green dress creates a bewitching and oh-so charming outfit.

I like how you're quite funky and cool while still remaining quite classy.

I do wonder where on earth you find such a beautiful background scenery, for they I feel are what makes you and the clothing special. The delicate light and contrast with the pink is most comely and cute, without being childish or overly sweet.

There is not a single element of your outfits I can object to: dazzlingly delicate as they always are, apart from the leopard headband with the shorts and the elegant gold blouse. The look would be more enticing, I feel, if the band were not there.

Of course! I have to admit that I generally do not like leopard print on ANYTHING (though I bought something with leopard print for the first time a couple of days ago - sunglasses and a pair of gorgeous stiletto sandals) so I may be biased.

Your haircut is most excellent - it really suits you and kudos for the shade of blonde. I know people can often be tempted to go for a hideously light shade that does not suit their skin tone or their roots, and that always irritates me.

Question, completely aside, I wonder if you've ever considered dying your hair a non-natural colour... like blue? Or green? Or pink?

Anyway, the gold shoes with the trousers and blouse in the fifth photo is exquisite.

I also love the fourth photo: reminds me of Helena Bonham Carter in 'A room with a view' or maybe the virgin suicides. It must be a 1970s wedding dress, because that fine form was one they often took.

The detail in your photos is always gorgeous.

This is a handsome post with some lovely and marvelous photography on show. You look very nice and pretty, and what you say is always pleasing, insightful, pertinent, savvy, shrewd and sharp.

On a last note: pulchritudinous and resplendent!

Thanks guys! I'm really glad you like them.

Zoe - my hair was bright blue, icy blue/gray, bright red, and then a weird red fade...the daisy coat is vintage from Etsy, and we found the backgrounds from driving around the Chicago suburbs for two days! Then we went back and looked at our shared clothes and figured out which colors etc. would go with which location. And yes, that is a wedding dress from the '70s! Thrifted for $6. Thanks for the thoughtful comment, I appreciate it.

No one nails the nostalgic suburbs vibes like Tavi.
P.S I love how you're writing for magazines. It means I can stalk your blog (not you, no lol, that's creepy!) offline as well. :-)

The photos with the striped pants, gold blouse, and gold platforms remind me of Dakota fanning in "The Runaways".
It is amazing and makes me love your style more..
