One of Them

“Tavi, take a look at this,” my dad said, waking me from my airplane slumber with excitement, pointing to an article in the New York Times about Apple products. Normally I take no interest in all that talk, but it was different this time around. For you see -- I have become one of them.

Too loyal to the good ole days when each Tweet was followed by “via web” as opposed to “via some kind of new-fangled Steve Jobs application,” I never planned to posses any of these modern gadgets. Until my sister got a laptop, which came with a free iPod Touch, which went to me. I was immediately converted, and felt pride in the way I could slide the “unlock” button with such ease; the way my “To Do” lists suddenly looked so much more efficient. The pseudo-notebook paper on a screen gave them validity, while real life notebook paper was for people who were amateurs at, well, life. Suddenly, I didn’t just have to buy deodorant. I had to buy deodorant.

These few days were bliss. But a dark cloud settled over my happiness as the Times article went on about the new Touch models. How they were so thin and sleek and could open envelopes. They had built-in microphones, and a million cameras, and, hell, you could probably make an Oscar award-winning movie with the new Touch. It had super powers, which made it possible for you to stalk anyone, ever.

And here I was, with the old one. I opened up my To Do list. I would have to find Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s house on my own.

This didn’t translate to my dad. “Aren’t you pleased with my shopping skills?” he asked, giddy. “We have the new model!”

I didn’t want to break it to him, but it was for his own good. “Dad, we don’t have the new model. It won’t be available for a while. We have the old one.”

His face fell before he began scrambling to find other possible explanations, pointing desperately at the upper left corner of our ancient Touch. “That? Isn’t that a camera? You’re sure?” he begged, as though asking once more would magically transform the device.

But he knew the answer. We both did. That was no camera; that was a useless, tiny black panel. Black, and filled with despair.

Suddenly, my iPod Touch was nothing to be proud of. It was not sleek, nor shiny, and could open no envelopes. Oh, God, I thought in a panic, what’ll I do about all those envelopes? It was a brick; as fat and useless as a Five-Dollar Foot Long. Even the boingy little noises it produced were as irritating as that Subway commercial. I pictured it under my bed, where it belonged and would soon be hidden, next to the first generation iPod Shuffle.

“Oh, that? You can have it if you want,” a friend of mine said back in fifth grade.

“Really?” I barely breathed.

“Yeah, it’s cool. Everyone in my family already owns an iPod. And I won it at some Bar Mitzvah.”

I fell in love with my new iPod Shuffle. Sure, it had no screen. And sure, it held approximately four songs. But that didn’t matter. It was an iPod. It was an iPod and it hung on a little iPod lanyard around my neck. I was one of them.

But as I would soon learn, a Shuffle could gain me no credibility. “It doesn’t even have a screen,” my friends would say, ticking away at their Nanos, trying to decide between Cheetah Girls and High School Musical. Indeed, I was definitely not one of them.

And the Touch situation was just the same. Distressed and unable to handle any more suffering, I began curling back into fetal position to sleep when I spotted a red hard candy on the floor in front of me. Hours earlier, I got it out of my backpack, dropped it, and just could not find it again. I had probably spent half of the eight-hour flight searching. And now, here it was, lodged in between the wall and the foot of the person in front of me.

Know what probably could’ve found it earlier?

The new iPod Touch.

My dad and I got off the plane soon thereafter. We got our luggage. We dragged our feet. We told the guy at customs we had a good time, but what did we know? We were no new iPod Touches.

“What’s that smell?” I asked my dad as we sat in silence on the EL train coming home. Then I remembered. I glanced at my To Do list. I no longer had to buy deodorant. I just...had to buy deodorant.

lulz Oh such a tragic read. It happens to the best of us: we're proud of what we got and then, poof, the love is gone with a new feeling of wanting to go buy the newest model. *tear*
I nearly bought the first generation shuffle last month. Just because it's lean and long and if I sit on it, my ass wont break it.

This was an entertaining read.
For a minute, I though "NO PICTURES?"

I bought my iPod 3rd generation nano second hand, when the 4th generation was all the rage. But that's ok. Because I like the older versions better. Japan makes cute cases for the 3rd generation.

They're outdated, so you can just call them 'vintage.' Haha that makes it cool in my book.

Admin said...

haha i love this. though I tend to find myself somewhat immune to the whole newest model thing, which I guess is good. My first gen. ipod touch suits me fine, and I'm sure I'd still be using my chunky, black-and-white ipod mini if I hadn't left it on a plane. sigh.

I've become one of Those People, as well, and whenever Apple makes a mistake, people gleefully point it out to me. "The DROID is now the #1 smartphone in America, Leah! How DOES IT FEEL?!?" "Uh, okay?"

I used to care more, but lately have been using an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach. I attained my current iPhone (the first generation) when the phone I'd been using flew out of my pocket and floated in an anti-gravity manner into space at the peak of a roller coaster bump. People have been getting fresh Droids and iPhones with 3G and iPhone 4s and such and encouraging me to do so, but I just know the instant I replace my old friend with a new one, I'll have really become one of Those People, and I'm not sure I'm emotionally ready for that kind of commitment.

An interesting commentary on the ultimate flaw of technology--the moment you get it it's already becoming antiquated. Also pretty funny ha.

This was a really good read. You're writing styles are very good! I love this story so much! This reminds me of when everyone had the Heely's sneakers, the ones where you can walk and roll, I was pretty much the only one without them. Then a few months later I finally got pink Heely's (when I think about now, gross) and I was so happy! I started rolling and stuff. Then pretty soon people weren't wearing them anymore, people moved onto Converse! When I think about it now, it's so silly to get something just because other people have it or be disappointed because people get tired of it.

Amy said...

Urg, I totally know what you mean. I bet someone or another in my class has it reserved for when it comes out to match their shiny new iPads... I mean, who needs both??? I've got the 3rd generation iTouch, and I was somewhere in the middle of the group of people who got it (I've had it for a little over a year and a half) and I was absolutely happy with it until I found out that the new will have a camera. That ruined everything.

Thanks for the wonderful post, Tavi. It's nice reading a blog I can relate to.

I know what you mean. I begged my parents to buy me an i-Pod (ANY i-Pod), and finally when I was ten I got the i-Pod classic. I was happy, no ecstatic, never mind that I couldn't work it...it was an i-Pod. So, I thought I was such a kewl kat with my i-Pod and it's pink Liz Claiborne case until a particularly snide classmate of mine walked up to me and said (with much sarcasm and thinking that she was clearly my superior) "An i-Pod classic? Those are SO old. I have the nano." And walked away leaving me feeling like an UNkewl kat and realizing that even if my classic was OLD, it could still hold more songs and was wayyy cooler in it's Liz Claiborne case then hers in it's metallic silver one. Besides, while hers (secretly) held Justin Bieber and Cheetah Girls..mine held Hole and Bikini Kill (at least, once I found out how to work it)...and THAT is much kewler than being a living-in-a-dreamland kewl kat. A culturally relevant and intelligent kewl kat is kewler than a non-intelligent technologically-superior kewl kat. In fact, that takes the kewl out of the kat. And there IS no kewl in kat anyway.

I can imagine the feeling though. I guess I've always been odd though, I've never cared if stuff is new or the latest model, probably got it from my mom as she's the same way.
Even though I can't relate, I think you're a fantastic writer, and I enjoy your blog greatly. :)

I suppose it's best, then, to just stay away from "keeping up" with technology. I'm perfectly happy with my old phone, one without the internet (though it does have a keyboard - how fancy!). The downside to smart phones and smart-technology in general is that one is able to be constantly connected. Do we really want that? It reminds me of the people in Wall-E. Doesn't sound like such a good idea to me. But I understand the frustration of not having the newest gadget. I used to hate not being "up-to-date" with the new phones and such.

Apple have managed to instill the desire for the latest version in us all so badly.

If you think about it, it kind of runs parallel to the way fashion refreshes itself every six months. Unfortunately, dated ipod's can't really be mixed and matched or restyled. I used to own the credit card sized nano (4th gen) which in my eyes will always be the coolest and hold kudos.

"That was no camera; that was a useless, tiny black panel. Black, and filled with despair."

You should pretend that it’s a camera – it’s too easy being able to instantly capture the moment, and then being able to print out several copies, or store it away where you can just bring it up whenever you want!

You guys can have all the fun of using pure brain power. Take all of the mental snapshots that you want. Sure it may take a while to remember these snapshots several years from now, but they didn’t coin the phrase, “Memories that last” for nothing!!! :-)

Oh man. In 1997, I managed to get a Casio "My Magic Diary" on sale. This amazing, pale purple device could send ACTUAL TEXT MESSAGES to someone with the same device - granted that they were in the same room haha. The really amazing thing about it though, was the built in universal remote control which I would use to harrass my teachers endlessly during class movie screenings. Volume up, volume down. Channel change. TV on, TV off. And they never worked it out!

It seemed like such cutting edge technology at the time and now it seems so sad. But I'm going to resurrect it anyway, just like I resurrected my Baby-G watch from the same year. I hear they're back, with the kids? Correct?

"New Model" addiction is worse in the adult world too, especially the developer forums where if its going to be a month old it probably needs to be returned for whatever just came out (you absolutely must stay within the 30 day return period.) Apple has a trick though, release one "new" a year.

If you said, a woman can't do that, or a black can't do that, or even a blond person can't do that, that would have been shitty-shitty flamewar-starting; that's "out", not edgy. But there it is, you said a kid can't do that and it's so "in", and nobody even funky'ng care.
That's not right. But, after all, Piaget said kids don't have brains, no? Uh, no.

I felt like this with my ipod touch when the new iphone came out. I just kept thinking, this thing can't even text!!!

Oh, and, I saw a picture of you in Glamour today. It was talking about grey hair being hip.

Haha. This is really funny.
I remember my first iPod, it was the Shuffle too, the one that dangles on your neck. I always felt so awesome with it.

Then I got the iPod Nano 3rd generation... and it has lasted me a few years. But now, it is just a situation full of despair. :|
My beloved iPod's memory has ended... but I worked out a deal with Mum and Dad, and I shall get the new iTouch for my birthday and Christmas combined... I'll have to wait a bit, and will not be able to listen to new music on my iPod for a while, but it's something.

** But, don't worry. I bet someone important is going to read this and think, "That Tavi is so funny, and she has good fashion sense. I will send her the new iTouch." ;)

"Too loyal to the good ole days when each Tweet was followed by “via web” as opposed to “via some kind of new-fangled Steve Jobs application,”"

This is sad. How you described the 'good ole days' is just plain sad. But then again, you're 12, so I understand. My good ole days involved ancient, boxy computers and the only way you could save something externally was using a floppy disk.

But then again, my perception of the 'good ole days' when it comes to technology would probably make people of an older generation cry as well.

Its amazing how sometimes we are only satisfied until someone has something better than us.

I see a deeper meaning behind this post that I think some aren't seeing. This is really great. Its like we have become so connected to technology and materialism that we are somewhat disconnected from the realities of life.

For example, noticing that you actually needed deodorant without a gadget telling you. This is great.

And to the person who said a kid couldn't start this...If it was made by parents, why would they choose to do something that was naturally not so believeable? I think Tavi is just super smart, or maybe even a prodigy! I applaud her for being original.

I'd never had thought i would get emotional about an iPod story hahaha. but same for me, of course I was feeling like the coolest kid ever when i got my fabulous new 3GS for my birthday back in march. But then of course, two months later the 4 hade to come and i was not seeing as great as it was 3 weeks before. but i've got another strategy: snobbing the iPhone 4. it went a little like:

random classmate:Oh have you seen the new amazing iPhone???

me: oh that's crap, i mean honestly, what is another camera good for? it's so narcissic to own one, and anyway, it's not as feminine as the 3GS, and oh, of course, who needs multitasking, no honestly, and it breaks easily, i heard.

so go for the snobbing, i mean in 2 years your iPod touch will be retro again, and that it'll be cool. that why i kept the mini (first and only generation , BW-screen)

love your blog young lady, keep going

Oh how I feel your pain my dear. Though I still use my ancient, paint covered shuffle, I wonder what it'd be like to have the new Touch or the highest of highs, the iPad. Eh, music is music.
