just tryin to tell it like it is

I am normally not very into Burberry at ALL but they killed it this season. Especially by perfecting the awkward diaper curtain Balenciaga AW 09 skirt (not as a knockoff, but as a way better version of a drapey skirt):

I like the color combo in the las one a lot.

christopher did a knotted silk dress for a/w08 (my favorite prorsum collection) i think that was more an expansion/reimagining of that idea and less knockin ghesquiere but i totally see where you're coming from.

oh no I didn't mean they're knockoffs, just a way better drapey skirt! That dress you linked to is BEAUTIFUL though.

vair vair true. the colours are so pretty and light and silky! but i'm a bit pissed off at the whole strong shoulder thing. i mean, really burberry? YOU TOO? *le sigh*

I don't really get the Burberry feel out of it. Still, it looks pretty freakin awesome! Hooray for that!

Anonymous said...

Yes, indeed, it does not resemble Bulberry in the least. Still, it is quite wonderful!

yes! i completely agree.

oh that link above to the dress IS very perfect! Agreed... I feel like balenciaga's skirt was far more awkward (not in a pretty sense) and burberry just made it a little prettier

pure gorgeousness!!!

yessss they definitely killed it with the draping!

I'd have to agree.
I've already seen some pretty good DIY projects on a couple of the skirts!

P.s. I like your little profile pic, who did it for you?
I'm trying to find as many artists as I can!

Disagree completely. The Balenciaga silk draped skirts DID look half awkward on the models, however, in editorials, it rocked the socks off Obama. Ever seen Georgia May Jagger wear it? Absolutely exquisite.

I found burberry messy until the very end when it started to get very very beautiful, about the time the silver sparkles came in (matching Emma Watson's gold dress she wore to the show). Before that it got diaper-like, and accentuated womens hips in a bad way.

Burberry was actually one of my fav collections for S/S '10. I loved the drapey knotted shoulders too :)

burberry was DEFINITELY incredible. i concur :)

I totally noticed that too. Burberry wins in the draped skirt battle, hands down

I love the diapers

but not the shiny diapers so much

I want to see a lace diaper of cream colour that looks I am wearing a cloud

Lucy-Jane said...

I like it too
BUT OMG THOSE MODELS ARE SO PAINFULLY SKINNY. Is the diaper for their laxitives?

Sheik-Chan said...

I want...the yellow dress, so bad. It is beautiful~!!

I love the pastel yellow color, the way the fabric folds. The thin black belt is a nice middle piece. Her scrunched socks and heels go great with the dress. I just love the whole outfit. :)

AHHH DRAPEY SKIRTS! BURBERRY!

zoomslow said...

i like the last one a lot! the tailored looking shoulders must have been tricky with the silky fabric - but looks gr8. the colours work well, and are well balanced - and most of all the diaper skirt here takes on more of an Arabian Nights look (whilst not going too far with it) :-))

calivintage said...

yeah, dude. seriously, who knew? i never look twice at burberry, but now i'm thinking about drapey skirts. hm, i think i need to get out my sewing kit...

The clothes are fine. I just like Sonia Rykiel and Jean Paul Gaultier better.

Barima said...

The fabrics and colours have a mostly lustrous quality that I like. The diaper curtain skirts are a touch hit and miss and the designs could all have stood to be slightly higher waisted ala Vision in Blue in photo no. 3 (and photo no. 6)

Seasonally speaking, it's on target

I've always loved Burberry Men though! It makes me wish I were a man, with broad, strong shoulders... sigh! Especially the 2008 bright colour collection, ommgggg. Oh to have a boyfriend that's fashion conscious and is not afraid to wear whatever he wants!

Hello Tavi,

As you love thrift stores I wondered if you might be able to add some of your favourites to our interactive googlemap. I'm trying to get loads of vintage/thrift stores all on one big map so that they're easily searchable by users.

Make sense? Here's the map:

I couldn't fault with the Burberry collection AT ALL! That sparkling coat towards the end was amazing, as soon as I saw the photo of Emma Watson arriving at the show in that gold dress, I knew it was going to be stunning.

I've had a post of my own on it too...take a look :)

Also, that Balenciaga skirt looks alot more elegant I think, but preferring the heavy knots of Bailey :)

I agree with one of your past statments that fashion like this is an art. Have to admire they way each fold in the skirt/fabirc is like the stroke of a pencil. The fabric chosen also gave it such a smooth feeling to each crease in the outfit. And the shadows even look good too!
Makes me so giddy.

Beth Ruby said...

See I always love Burberry but I agree that they completely nailed it this collection.
Love the pastel colours and the sequins!

Hi there... This may seem weird, but I find your Blog amazing! Weird, because I am a 51 year old woman In south central Missouri, and I know not a thing about fashion. I just srarted reading your Blog, and I can't stop. It has really fired my imagination, even though I have no idea who or what most of it is about. I think it appeals to me because I am a flower gardener, and a Polymer Clay jewelry artist. I guess we all create art in our own way.
Please continue to follow your dreams. Just remember that these years you are at home, are the best ones for trying your wings...when you don't have to work a real job.

I like them all except the pale pink one near the end the way its folded and draped at the crotch kind of makes it look like a front wedgey.. or is that just me? lol

Nicholas Ghesquiere was known to straight up take Kaisik Wong and literally copy it verbatim (visually) for his runway collection.

http://www.nytimes.com/2002/04/09/nyregion/is-copying-really-a-part-of-the-creative-process.html?pagewanted=all

I'm not sure where the references for this collection came from but you never know, he might have ripped the whole "window drapes on your thighs" thing too.

Anonymous said...

It's nice to see them getting away from the 'chav' tag they had a few years ago but honestly - that looks a little too like nappies that need changing for my liking and so unkind to a woman with any kind of hips!

Judy said...

Nice pictures, I think that it was a great show, really "phénoménal".

Natalia Sepulveda said...

Way too similar for my liking... but I do agree, Burberry did it better. To be honest with you and I know this will come back to haunt me... I thought this collection of Balenciaga was quite ugly.

HumanAdult said...

was just wondering whether Balenciaga skirts could have been inspired by the dhotis that Indian men wear.

http://www.upasana.in/files/Dhoti.jpg

it's almost like a mini dhoti if such things could exist

Heather said...

ooooooo i love these! i really want to go out, but some of this material, and make an amazing draped dress like these. :)

Just because the draping is awesome and well done, doesn't make it right--Still looks like a diaper.
