o sisters let's go down

Girl by Band of Outsiders' Spring 2011 collection made the down-to-earth and simple seem otherworldly. The fabrics were light and airy, the nature-inspired prints barely there in shades of pale green and brown, and when draped in a style slightly Grecian, evoked the mood of a kind of Atlantis. It all reminded me a bit of this clip from O Brother Where Art Thou. The water, the trees, using that nature environment to get somewhere kind of spiritual and immortal...

This being Band of Outsiders' first Girl collection, and having to strongly differentiate it from Boy and Man, Scott Sternberg was aiming for the ultra-feminine. He left behind the pink and frills often associated with girliness and went for a very stripped-down and bare version. Also, Girl? Man? Boy? I am now waiting for Pet and Grandma and Second Cousin's Hairdresser's Roommate's Niece's Cat's Original Owner.
So ethereal and pretty and misty. Seeing that the brand could go in a direction opposite of preppy was the most exciting to me, but the women's clothing for Boy were also great. Perfect summer camp vibes. The shoes! Someone somewhere on eBay has to have a really weird club kid version of Teva sandals, right?

  4. It's like the perfect combination of girl goddess, old-timey underwear, not-so-virginal vestal virgins, and angel girl. Have you read Girl Goddess by Francesca Lia Block? Also reminds me of that.

  5. Wow, the first garments look so delicate, airy and free. Now the second batch just looks like fun.

  6. Wow, the designs are impressive. The first picture is almost angelic with the lighting. My favorite is actually the shorts. They are so delicate, and would be perfect for an underwater editorial. Thanks for sharing the photos.

  7. I will be sorely disappointed if these models (especially those in the photo right below the embedded video) don't have "trip <3" written on their underwear.

  13. Hi Tavi - I hadn't heard of this label, what a wonderful collection (and it really is like the scene from BWAT).

Thought you might be interested to know that the company behind Teva sandals also manufacture Ugg Australia brand ugg boots. As a business I think their behaviour is pretty unethical, I did some research and wrote about it on my blog here in case you are interested:

  37. The white pieces are so simple, but I see a divinity quality to them, as well (sort of like what I imagine the sirens to wear - like the women in the water in O Brother). The one-shoulder dress is beautiful. Though it looks a bit sheer; it probably wouldn't be good fit for the workplace.

  57. I usually don't fret about thin models but the shoulder of the girl in the off-the-shoulder dress is very troubling. With the concern in the industry why would that be the shoulder they want to highlight!? So very thin and IMO not attractive.

  70. It's hard to focus on the clothes when all I can think of is making all those girls some sandwiches! This shot http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5247/5345317942_4ddaec6088_b.jpg especially makes me want to bust out he peanut butter and jelly.

Note: this is not a reflection on you, Tavi, but the people who choose super duper young models with all their bones showing. I realize that some girls just like some boys go through crazy metabolism spurts and look like that normally, but it being on "film" and in fashion worries me that it is giving the wrong impression about ideal body types.

    Now go clean your room!

  75. I adore some of your postings, but I am a bit baffled with your style. I don't quite understand why Prada sends a quirky little girl samples of their line??? I'm not getting it??? Your style seems that of a child that maybe wears a lot of hand me downs? It's not an attractive style or anything that someone would want to take inspiration from, in my opinion of course.

  76. not my cup of tea. the models look like priestesses waiting for the whip, or like "actresses" from one of David Hamilton's movies. if they were aiming for some sort of soft focus lens erotic they kinda slathered, i think.
