pop and such

Woohoo, the new issue of Pop came out! Which means...

Enlarge to read. The whole experience was crazy, I feel like a lot of it was maybe so special that publishing too much would feel exploitative? We'll see once I sort through the 2300 pictures. From nine months ago.

Dudes, the rest of this issue is SO GOOD. I know I contributed and all but I mean that sincerely. LOOKY:

I'm really glad they didn't jump on the "Femininity! 1950's! ~Real women!~, a phrase used to create the illusion of inclusiveness while actually invalidating the body image of others!" and instead used the "feminine housewife" clothes of the season on crossdressing dudes.
Other favorite editorial moments of mine have to be the spankin' angsy youthy menswear...
...the various stories devoted to travel, which almost feel like the team built entire editorials based merely on the feelings that arose as they walked around, with some lenses hazy and some lighting cold. This one is from the Moscow shoot...
And from the Rome one...
Obviously I was also way into the Britney Spears situations, which I wrote about before. My other favorite features have to be Cindy Sherman, Gloria Steinem, and Hillary Clinton. The issue is blonde-themed, so there's also an interesting article about the Dumb Blonde stereotype by Marilyn Monroe biographer Sarah Churchwell and an incredible editorial devoted to blondes.

The use of magazine clippings and photos of famous blondes made for interesting commentary on the depiction of blondes in pop culture and the media.

And now I am worn out but hugely inspired. Pop is a prime example of the current need for inspired and inspiring magazines of substance -- this kind of stuff just isn't as good online.

  14. oh, tavi, i wish you could experience high school the way it truly is, how weird it is, instead of how strange everything is through the eyes of magazines and blogs and everything else; how strange everything is because we're told it's supposed to be strange.
i wish you were given the space and time to think about things as they truly are, instead of how things are as they are presented to you and everyone else.

  25. Some great images here, I am so pleased that chunky knitwear is back in trend this season. And I so agree with you about the ridiculous 'real women' statement which is just as alienating as super thin models (who at least are not held up as being the norm)

  26. I love the Moscow photos. And the very thin models - I'm thin myself and I'm glad about it, and I also try to keep myself this way.

  27. I'm so glad that POP put some men into the editorials as the main focus. Male models in fashion are really unappreciated even though they do the same kinds of work as the women.

  29. Hi...I just discovered your blog--my mom read an article about you in the New Yorker and sent your link to me...Wow! I love your style of writing and your fashion sense--even from the few posts of yours I've browsed so far, I know I'll definitely keep checking every day! I'm exactly nine months younger than you, and it feels weird to look at people like you and Madonna's daughter (different fashion style but created her own LINE, as you probably know) and that Asian girl who wrote a book about birds at age 12 (my passion is writing, actually) and think "Wow...same age as me and yet so much more accomplished!" While I don't think I'll be making headlines anytime soon, I really admire the name you've made for yourself. And yeah, this comment is kind of rambling, and probably not very different from anyone else's comment, but just wanted to let you know today you got one more fan. <3

  32. My growing love for Pop is developing beyond my means. ―(T_T)→ I ordered four copies because I'm insane... well, besides the covers, I'm also obsessed with Murakami's work. I think reading ©Murakami changed my life late in my high school career? Read it if you haven't already. I think a lot of the concepts attached to his work tie into various aspects of CdG, specifically S/S '09 and A/W '07.
I'll probably do HQ scans of the covers when I get the time, likely over the vacation.

  78. I bought this issue of POP, maybe because of your post about Britney or because I was curious, or both.

But I completely agree with you and find this magazine very inspiring, also because they kind of embrace the bloggers and don't feel them as a threat to magazines. They smartly combine digital media and printed media, which is, in my opinion, a formula for the future.

  79. Just bought and read (cover-to-cover) this issue of Pop and it was truly inspiring. Don't get me wrong, I am a devoted reader of Elle and Vogue but as much as I adore them, I have to admit their editorials are a little uninspiring. Pop is fresh, edgy and experimental and has rather more interesting content than ANOTHER feature on this seasons 'must-have buys'.
Well done Tavi, great post on a brilliant issue. X

  81. Your comment about the whole "real women" trend at first bugged me. One of the things that alienated me from fashion for a long time is that my height and build were never represented. I'm 5'3" and very bottom-heavy, and every woman in my family has the same build. Even if I dieted down to a size 8, I would still be outside the norm for how designers create their clothes. When I would look at skinny models or go into a store and find that there was nothing over a 10, I'd feel left out! Even amongst the taller and svelte-r/more athletic types I know, I didn't know anyone who was built like the contemporary fashion model. As much as I don't want to invalidate the tall, slim type sent down the runway, there is a touch of unreality about them. One of the things that DID get me to care more about fashion was the current 1950s/60s revival and the Mad Men-ification of clothing, as A-line skirts and pinup-girl sweaters go a long way towards balancing out some of my figure problems or enhancing the aspects of my figure that are more desirable.

I get WHY the phrase "real women" is alienating to those who won the genetic lottery and are tall and slim and have high metabolism. (And it is a cringeworthy phrase, Oprah-ish in its condescending affirmation.) However, it would be great if the fashion industry embraced those of us whose figures might not be 100% ideal, just as it idealizes those who are tall and slim.

  84. That was a long read, but I respect it you write with the tenacity of a much older woman. Perhaps Jane Austin-ish in a way, but less romance and more fashion. Nice write up. You're incredibly lucky you got to do that I know women who would kill for that type of editorial inclusion.

    ReplyDelete
  85. You should be very proud and post all your publishings! Amazing!

Its so socially interesting, [gay] men in haute women's fashion. I wonder if its an editorial wave or a fashion evolution? I just hope they don't have to starve themselves for it...

  98. Chelsea- I think the industry should embrace thicker body types, too, but it can be done without using a phrase that creates a divide among women and determines how "real" they are based on how they look. THAT is my problem with the phrase, because ALL women are real women.

But then I saw from your post that these clothese were on actual people- models are very good at holding their bodies like they are dead or are dolls, huh? It totally blew my mind.
I wonder about this thing, maybe you do too- how am I really into fashion and also a feminist? Cuz I really love this photo on an artistic level, but I would be lying if I said that the pervasive aesthetics of dead doll/heroine chic etc didn't get to me.
