fashion film winners

The A Shaded View on Fashion Film contest has closed, and I chose my winner:

It speaks for itself, but I'll explain my choice a bit: It's wonderfully sensory. The schoolhouse (church? either way, creepy) felt suffocating and the outside like fresh air, and the clothes are to credit for this along with the music, camera angles, and acting. All of this matters, because fashion itself is about more than clothes. The context of a dreary schoolhouse doesn't make the white dresses glamorous or anything, but they give them a lot of character. It's not an advertisement anyways, but if it was, I'd be more intrigued by that idea than one about showing how cute they are. I also like that it creates both a mood and a story.

Diane Pernet, my fellow judge, chose this fun Hedi Slimane tribute:

Thanks to everyone who submitted their work -- it was so hard to choose but I really enjoyed watching them all!

  1. Hi, I'm wondering what the second song in the first video is? Thanks.

  2. Oh wow that was a beautiful video you chose as winner, Tavi. You're absolutely right about the setting giving the dresses character. Putting them in a different place really shapes the look.

The second one is cute too.

  4. Pefect choice for the winner, Tavi. As an aspiring fashion director myself, I definitely agree with how the setting, music, choice of outfits, and literally everything else that is included in a scene, ultimately reflect the mood and could tell a wonderful story.

  16. It's true, fashion is certainly not just in clothes. Countless times I've seen a designer outfit online, shot in a beautiful location and impeccably styled, and when I saw it in person it looked flat, off-putting almost.

Oh, and that video would make a splendid lookbook shoot.

  18. Tavi, can I make another film recommendation to you? It's just that I'm almost sure that the first film was inspired by 'Innocence' (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0375233/), a French film about a girls' boarding school. You'd like it.

  25. pretty groovy. i want that one gal's redder-than-red hair.

I think you were right about the schoolhouse/church feeling stuffy. so much so that it affected the ladies' brains and they never put on the pants ment to go with those shirts. but even i could breathe better when they were outside and maybe they could too and then went away to put on their pants.:)

  26. I love both choices!
    And I love the ASVOFF-concept!
I live in Copenhagen, Denmark, and went to see Diane Pernet when she visited Copenhagen Dox last year.
She and Danish designer Henrik Vibskov made an evening out of it and we got to hear all about the thoughts behind asvoff and see all the amazing films.
    It was truly inspiring.

  30. Great choice! FYI - its a church they start out in which I think really makes such a statement with the white dresses and the black maryjanes and then changing to cosmic prints and barefeet in the woods. Very awesome video.

  31. Love it! :) Omg your blog is soo amazing! :D

  32. That first video is really interesting; I really liked the music choices, it trully gave an intriguing touch to the whole video.
I also liked how there was something misterious and even ethereal about the models.

...and the second video! It's so cute and really nice to watch! The music was great, and I could really tell the enormous amount of work it took to be done.

    Both are great! Ó u Ò

  37. Brilliant choice for the win!

  38. Mmm. Can I play devil's advocate? (Now, Tavi, I think you're very clever and precocious. So much so that I almost wish you weren't interested in fashion, because it is ultimately a very trivial cause for someone very smart to spend a lot of time on. Unless, of course, the goal is to make money. Then it's a smart thing to spend time on.)

That said, this video is boring. It's the kind of "film student-y" thing that anyone over age 23 would find trite. It could be edited down to about 30 seconds and still have the same effect.

And I might get flamed for this, but in the world of fashion and beauty, one expects to see beautiful creatures lithely strolling around (unless of course you're pointing out the fact that you are using ordinary people - like Dove - or you are being ironic).

The poor man's models/actresses in this video are distracting. Unless of course, that is the point. But what do I know. I'm just a soccer mom.

    ReplyDelete
  39. SoccerMom: Distracting? What do you mean by that?

That said, I thought the first video was well filmed, but somehow it...lacked something. It was though, beautiful.

  40. The first one (your chosen winner) Reminds me of Erin Fetherston and Elle Von Unwert's "Wendybird".

  41. Tavi, I think you'd find the imagery in the very hypnotic and suspense-filled movie, "Picnic at Hanging Rock" (an Australian film from the 1970s) to be quite evocative...a similar aesthetic to the film you chose. Here's a link to the trailer:

  42. I am happy to see a fellow Florida art student reaching success prior to even graduating! This is inspiring.

ps. I'm 24 AND a mom and I don't find this at all trite.

  45. Wow. The first video was amazing. I wanted to watch again and again. It was so simple but so complicated at the same time! It wonderful how just simple images can tell such a complicated story. Actions speak louder then words.
