Chalk

My sister came home from school and traveling for the first time in 11 months this summer and had the idea for us to make this short film. It's mostly her thing, so I won't take too much credit, other than drinking Nesquik and smiling and picking out the socks. It's not fashion-related (the outfits are really supposed to be more those of someone who likes fun clothes, not fashion) but I thought I'd post it anyway because we're really proud of it. I mean, just see what critics have to say:
"I think it's very good!" -Our mom
"You dyed your hair without our permission?!" -Our dad
We were aiming to enter it in a Vimeo contest, not because we really thought we'd win but because we needed a deadline and it would've been cool for it to be judged by the folks there. There was a last-minute technical mishap and we missed the entry deadline, but then we decided it's more fun this way and that artists shouldn't compete with each other. (Uh, I retract that statement now. We were making ourselves feel better. Sometimes contests can be good things.)
For a while now I've been in a kind of rut where I second-guess my outfits and are more conscious about the people around me whenever I go anywhere, so it was great to just do something like this and remember that it can be fun to embrace stares. And fun to wear Comme des Garcons toe shoes. And have red hair. Oh, I didn't tell you guys about my red hair! Sheba did it a couple weeks ago. This is it at its best, methinks. Enjoy!

  48. I love short art videos like this.
I personally took it as a reprocentative of growing older, you feel that you just want to have fun and go crazy but then an older person cuts you down telling you to grown up (I thought this from your spoons being ripped off after the joy of them all being put up) then at the end you popping your own balloons is like your kind of doing as society wants you to and thus killing youth and so called 'growing up'
You should make more videos! :D

This reminds me of the time that my friends and I ran around town taping pieces of binder paper to things. We had drawn and written on them, most of them were nonsense. Then as we were walking back to her house we saw this lady staring at one taped to a fence. She looked like she was going to rip it off. She reached out her hand as if to grab it, but then she didn't. I like to think it meant something.

  74. Hey hi Tavi
I'm so curious about you saying that you feel more self-conscious about your outfits now. Is it because people recognise you from the blog and have an expectation that you will always be wearing something mind-blowing, or is it to do with the clothes themselves maybe not speaking to how you want to express yourself right now?

(WHOA! and suddenly it got all deep!)

  83. Dear girl, you will light the world up.

Or, if you choose to be a quiet genius, you will send a glow out among your intimates.

Whatever you chose, I'll be glad there's a Tavi out there. (Well, as long as you don't do anything, you know, bad.)

I love Chalk. I predict it'll grow to have quite a following. Your sister is very talented. (I hope she's able to hang on to the ideals she brought along home from her travels.) One note: on Spoon morning, you have ruffled socks, but through Spoon day, they are different. Sorry to mention it.

Also - you frequently make me remember myself. I don't know if you'll understand that, but it's true.

Finally, It took until the viewing of the film for your dad to know that you'd dyed your hair red? Or did he just assume you'd had your mom's permission? Or (I don't know much about these things) was it a rinse out dye?

    You're fantastical.

  100. It's all there. The emerging ravishing beauty, the through-the-camera charisma, the knowing on-film charm that makes you unbearably talented.

I was certain you would become either a major fashion designer or artist, which is still probable. But after seeing you in this amazingly adorable short, I am beginning to wonder if acting isn't also going to feature even more in your future as well.

  149. Tavi, please don't fret too much, and remember that no matter what people say about your clothes, your hair, anything at all- as long as you're having fun, that's all that matters in the end- period. And isn't that what fashion is all about anyways, having fun?

  153. What I love about this video besides how you show what objects and color mean in your lives(I'm a material culture scholar) is two people (you and your sister) encouraging each other's artistry and helping each other to execute ideas. So many times, I say to someone, "Let's do this!" And the response is a list of why "this" wouldn't work. Other times, I meet creative people, and I say, "Let's do this!" And they tell me how "this" is possible and help me to execute it. And this video reminds me to always keep searching for the people who collaborate with me in the execution of dreams.

  157. Sarah-Sure. I agree with you -- sometimes that is the way to get your work seen. Plus there is just SO much work out there, it sometimes has to be picked through.

I was watching this vid with my music playing and you should listen to it to this track because I thought it fit really well---so funny, I thought it was the video music atfirst then I realized it was my own! the track is called before tigers (gold panda rmx) and its by Health. You have to loop the track twice but I swear its good good good

  166. You look great with red hair! And I can't begin to tell you how many levels of awesome this video has *-*
About embracing stares, I think it's good, you should be less conscious about people around you and just wear what makes you feel pretty and comfortable, no matter how much people stare at you.

  169. Ahh you are starting to take notice about what people think? Tavi, this is the curse of growing up. Don't fall prey to it! Remember the whole reason why you have so many readers is because of YOU. the way YOU dress. Not the way the girls of seventeen do.

I just wanted to say, I really love the video, and your hair! I have red hair too, we're hair buddies lol! :D I need to redye it though cause it faded A LOT and i dyed it pink too, but the pink was less permanent, so it's mostly the red showing. It's kind of orangy with blonde, red and pink streaks now.
Oh and you've made me realize.. I'm not all that fashiony but I just like fun clothes!! That's such a perfect way to describe it. I used to think I like fashion but I don't. Your blog, and hipster musings, are the only fashion blogs I read now.. other fashion blogs just seem so shallow.
Anddd I love Norwegian! (random much? :D) I'm learning Swedish but I really had my doubts if I should learn Norwegian or Swedish though but I figured I don't really know any Norwegian people or whatever so what's the point, heh. Norwegian and Swedish are both sooo easy.. I speak Dutch, English and German too and it all relates ^^
    I hope you read this :3 bye~
