100 facts about Darfur

Are you going to Twitter about Darfur tomorrow?

I know I just posted this but in a situation like this what does it matter how naggy I am as long as it works. Mary came up with this genius idea to make Darfur a Trending Topic on Twitter starting tomorrow and considering there are about 18 Million people on Twitter this could really help. I wouldn't know who the hell Camilla Belle is if not for the Twitter Trending Topics, and maybe some people will go, "Hey! Darfur! That was in Bruno! I wonder what it is exactly?" and click on it. And then they'll see all these striking facts (see below) and then more people will know.

The media has not been extremely talkative about it, neither have politicians, or the UN, because there have been seven major genocides in history-that's only the MAJOR ones-and I don't think many people want to believe the human race needs more people to die in order to see the problem in a government hiring an army to kill its own people. Since the higher-ups haven't spoken, the normal people that use the Internet every day have to, and the politicians will listen in the end.

To learn more about this project and the conflict in Darfur, visit Mary's blog. I wrote this a while ago that gives more information on the genocide too. Read the facts below and Tweet them tomorrow. Tell your friends. Every Tweet will add up!
Reblog this and I will gladly add your link to the bottom of this post.

hey hi look

Taking a break from my break to repost something Mary posted and asked people to repost and is important. So read it, tweet it, repost it, and once again these are Mary's words, I'm not that smart so don't credit me or whatever.
The Yokoo items were relisted on eBay, check those out too.
Thanks guys! ..and READ:

!

I'm sure you've all heard, and half of you are on, Twitter right now. As social media becomes increasingly relevant in today's culture, it's interesting to see how it can be used to help social activism.

II've made no secret of the fact that the genocide in Darfur is something I feel strongly about; the lack of empathy and regard for human life is ridiculous and needs to stop. However, it can only be stopped if attention is brought to it. And we're going to make it a topic.

How Twitter works is by using a #, it defines a word and sets it apart as a topic. All statements also have to be in a 140 character limit. So I've prepared for you 100 statements, hashtag included, about Darfur that are under 140 characters. 85 are posted today, and more will be on Monday.

On Wednesday, July 29th, (and the days after) I want you to tweet as many of these messages as you can.. space them out, come up with them of your own, tell your friends to... basically, make Darfur a topic. It's an easy way to make a change using the internet an bring attention to something that so desperately needs it.

If you repost this article in your blog, tweets & explanation, let me know and I will link you at the bottom of this post.

I have nothing to say about the facts, except that they are all verified and pretty much speak for themselves... when ironically, the Darfuri people can't.

i started writing this post about the first picture then decided to write what is basically a novel's length about how awesome some people are

Comme des Garcons S/S '94.
This is what I'm going to wear the rest of the summer. I've been too obsessed with layering and too caught up in the idea that minimalism equals boring. It does not! I want to find a way to wear it that doesn't stray too far away from my usual...acid-ness.
A few magazine things:
-I suck at keeping no-shopping pledges. Bought Flaunt and the new issue of Vogue Italia the other day.-Flaunt is cool. I love some of the art features, and the interview with Limi Yamamoto is aMAzing. I had no clue she thought so differently from her dad about fashion, or that Yohji kind of forced her into design. There's an article written by Thakoon which I didn't really get-it's about inventions, and one is a robot that adjusts sizes for fittings for designers, which I guess makes sense and is practical but I think if I were I designer I'd want to see the girl wearing the clothes. But I'm not a designer. Interesting to read his writing, anyway. I'm surprised they didn't jump on the SO MICHELLE OBAMA LOVES YOU deal like, uh, everyone else. The fashion editorials aren't really my thing and there's weird blood naked people stuff which is, uh, also not my thing, SOMEHOW. It goes on my bookshelf along with the other magazines I will never cut out of.-Vogue Italia is AMAZING. SERIOUSLY EPIC. For one, Kristen McMenamy is KILLING it in every single page with which she graces her beautiful face. The pictures in her feature and the cover all work so well together but still stand on their own like...things that stand on their own and are good at it (this is the vocabulary what I've learned from Seventh Grade Language Arts Class for Average Students, prettymuchyeah.) There's also a bajillion page spread with pictures and an article on Milla Jovovich and Sasha Pivov-pavlova (her new name after I discovered the dish in London,) both of which are MAH GURLS and I love them greatly. There is another spread with paintings of/pictures from the aw 09 Comme des Garcons collection, which I actually might have to tear out and frame, other than that, the magazine will remain unripped for all eternity. Other features: Rosario Dawson, an article by Toni Morrison, a few other great editorials and an art piece that kind of blew my mind. I don't know who or what it was about but the photos are crazy good, like some Kellogs cereal that I'm sure has used that term, "crazy good," at some point or another. I somehow can't even manage to hate the paparazzi pictures of models walking around and wanting privacy that the magazine features, and I think stuff like that is probably one of the stupidest things magazines do.
I'm just gonna go right ahead and say the articles are good too. I don't, uh, know Italian. But my mom does, or did, at one point. So nevermind. Any translators? Hehhhhh.
BUT WAIT! The magazine costs $16, but you also get a nice glossy supplement mag with pictures from all of the aw09 shows. Nice to have in print, especially for inspiration journals, and they don't waste paper with stupid and unopinionated reviews like SOME MAGAZINES. (Robin Givhan 4evz.) Anyway, I'm glad I didn't spend $20 on the hugeeee aw09 magazine I think Elle came out with a couple months ago-it was thick and nicer than this edition, but, uh, you know, $20. This Italia Vogue pack was $16 for the whole lot.
BUT WAIT AGAIN! (do I sound like an encylcopedia salesman yet? This is the encyclopedia to your LIFE though. So stop whining and learn how to be awesome, I mean GEEZ.)I would've spent $16 for this alone.
So last year, as ya'll know, Vogue Italia did a "Black Issue," which featured only black models and actresses. This year they did it using Barbies, and the articles pay homage to both black women in fashion and, of course, Barbie, since this year was her 50th anniversary. The editorials are amazing, the styling is great, and though I haven't been too fond of the clothes they've been making for Barbie in recent years (why no Sophie and I do not spend hours until 4 in the afternoon on her laptop playing Barbie.com makeup and dressup games what no) they made a lot of them look awesome and got to use clothes from decades ago (or so I presume) and all the styling is just rad and MAKES SENSE, which some editorials in REAL PEOPLE magazines do not. Like, hi, I'm on the beach, except this is my coat that isn't even ironic, just stupid. I've only read the Diana Ross article (they have one, you guys!) but whatever, the writing can be crap, the pictures are too good. It's also the perfect not-too-big-or-too-small (oh yes we are referencing GOLDILOCKS now, people) size. It's like a little book. And I have flipped through it and basically eaten every page a number of times now and am still not bored with it.-The July issue of Dazed & Confused is probably not available any longer because I think the new issue is out already but I'm glad I got it a couple days before the new one. Vivienne Westwood interview James Lovelock about Global Warming, David Lynch and Dangermous and Sparklehorse (hmm, one of these names does not belong in the mythical creature category, WHICH ONE?) Micachu and David Shrigley talk about art and music, Antony Hegarty and Riccardo Tisci talk about each other and this seriously beautiful fossil/bone/Georgia O'Keefe-like bolero that RicRic made AntAnt.IS THIS NOT EPIC.
The issue has good editorials like always and little interviews.
THIS I PLAN TO BUY TOMORROW IF I CAN SCRAPE TOGETHER SOME CASH:It's in 3-D! I don't even know who any of the people on the cover are but IT'S IN 3-D! *4th grade flashback to 3-D issue of Nickelodeon Magazine arriving in mail*
Nah, it'll be way better than that, of course. And no I never subscribed to that magazine for two years WHAT STOP INTERROGATING ME.
Also, I bet 2,469.99 bones that they use the Mario Schwab 3-D dress somewhere here. If I win I can afford that Yohji book I was telling you guys about the other day! Yep, the $3,000 one!

And lastly..I don't know if this is still around either but it's rather great. Lots of tiny interviews on basically every page-Raquel Zimmerman (she rocks), Mama Westwood (she rocks harder), two random teenage boys talking about Jack Kerouac and Aggy Deyn and getting drunk in the snow and being cool accompanied by two random pictures of them drunk but not in snow, crazy makeup artist Alex Box (she's eccentric and crazy though I don't think makeup and clothing can't exist without the other), Todd Selby (I adore him), the guy that started that magazine Wooooo (he's funny), Terry Jones (haven't finished that one yet), The Yeah Yeah Yeahs (marry me, Karen), Susan Boyle (I don't even know), and Alek Wek (I had no clue she was from Sudan!) (Speaking of, go support Clothing With a Cause! Please!) among others. One editorial about simply the color pink is awesome. Not bad for a 300th issue.

Well that's that. After the 3-D one I'd better refrain from buying any more for a month or so..September is coming up and September is the thickest!

I also am going to take a hiatus for the rest of the summer...there's not that much time left and I don't want to spend it on the Internet. If I get bored I'll post (expect this to happen a lot) but I want biking and reading to come first when I have nothing else to do. So uh, have a good rest of the summer, though you'll probably see me pathetically writing again here soon!

hide your head in the sand little girl

Off to our cottage for a few days..don't know when we're coming back. THIS IS WHAT IT'S LIKE TO LIVE ON THE EDGE, GRANDMA. But it'll be within this week. I bet all the stuff I ordered this week will come while we're gone, too. They'll probably come today while we're on the train. And I'll be able to feel it. It's called Telepathy. Like in Matilda. Oh! That's the thing I meant to pack. Thanks for the reminder, guys.
My friend took me to an Elton John and Billy Joel concert the other night, which was awesome. I love Elton but Billy Joel was being a ham and telling lame jokes. Of the three Muppet Show VHS's the video rental place had, the Elton John one was my favorite, then Julie Andrews, then Gene Kelly. Billy Joel probably would've hit on Miss Piggy or spoken in German accents randomly (he did that in the concert..uh relevant.)That Donald Duck suit is Murakami daisy suits levels of awesome. And there are insane pictures of his outfits here. Eiffel Tower hat? Omg.
So I added up the costs of all the books I want to buy on Amazon (the whole no-shopping thing only applies for clothes, as of last night) and all the cheapest versions, not including shipping, total up to $1,279.26. There are some 2 thousand and 3 thousand dollar Tim Walker and Yohji books too, but maybe I can pay for those with my PENNY JAR OR SOMETHING *fumes*
Why are fashion books so expensive? And why did th
e local bookstore have to start carrying good foreign magazines that are all around $10? Who is God? Why do we exist? Just a few questions to get yer mind working in the morning. Puzzles, if you will.
And as I've been writing this one of the pairs of shoes I just ordered cam
e and ahhhhh, I can't wait to post. If today didn't require lots of walking I would wear them the whole time. And in my sleep. They fit perfectly and the sole is so comfy!
Ok, well off I gooooo. Have a good weekend!

zine

For our third post today I bring you...my untitled zine! I've been making a few dorky ones for a while (just for friends) but figured this could be a fun project and hopefully I can get out a new one every month or so. Right now there are 4 in stock but if they sell quickly or I get emails about it I might put up more copies.
For all the information you can go to the Etsy page. I have an Etsy store now! Aren't I hip and with it, kids?
Anyway, that's it for today. G'night folks.

neopolitan dynamite

Remember that Napoleon Dynamite movie? It was all the rage~ in third grade. Then Juno replaced it. Now even Popeyes uses sketch-like fonts in their ads and it's just gotten annoying.
This outfit is a few days old but I rather enjoyed putting it together. I don't even like this type of licorice that much.
Thrifted dress and skirt, random jewelry and box and ribbon, Baggu bag, Slow and Steady Wins the Race shoes.
Yellow and black stripes, my bumble bee Baggu bag.
Pink and black stripes, random ribbon.
Tiny flowers, thrifted dress that secretly goes to my ankles (will hem..eventually.)
Boxes boxes boxes.
Beady blue and pink!

My hair has become a mop of wtf-ery. I think I'll just get it cut like Mia/Edie as it was when I first went short (really short) and possibly shave a little of it like Cole Mohr and then confuse the lady at the local bookstore even more (last week when I was paying for glow in the dark space stickers (that don't even WORK, ugh) she asked, "Hello young man, can I do anything for you today?" Actually, I am a man. I'm a 40 year old man, and I dress up my neighbor in clothes and take pictures of her. But don't tell anyone!)

I am officially swearing myself off shopping for a good few months after 3 purchases made in the past 3 days. Let's see how I'll do? Maybe I can make an exception for the Salvation Army though, I miss the workers there! And no one buy these so they'll still be available in a few months-they are the perfect mix of brown/chunky and girly. Or you could, y'know, buy them for me in color taupe and size 6. That way you wouldn't have to get them yourself.
Just sayin.

it was 40 years ago today

Another excuse for me to post lots of APOD photos, meheheheh.
It's semi ridiculous how many outfit pictures I have saved and haven't posted yet. Will get to that when I have time on my hands. Right now I'm really busy enjoying summer by renting movies and sleeping. I am a woman with priorities, damnit.

Three of my favorite designers just being awesome as per usual. Y'know. Whatevs.

1. Hussein Chalayan Ad Campaign
Ye heard me. I was surprised but man what a great first campaign. I love the mysterious journal feel and sketches, which add a lot to the clothes even in pictures like the 4th one where you can't see the clothes really well.
Shit, could you imagine how epic an ad campaign for ss 09 would've been?! Still need to post on the impulse buy from that collection I made like a month ago and somehow still haven't posted on. The frugal grandma that makes up 96% of me wants to hate it but ummm it's beautiful.(source)

2. Rei Kawakubo's portrait series of Jun Takahashi of UNDERCOVER

AJRFWEGITUWAEHFKJSDBASD *flail* *falls* *gets back up* *flail*
One thing is that it's two of my favorite designers of all time, one of them honoring the other *flail* and all this awesome love goin around. But also seeing Rei Kawakubo's artwork outside of clothing is amazing too. Ugh, what can she not do. I bet she's even good at SPORTS. She probably makes stuff like
this in 5 minutes and then is all, "brb, game of b-ball with the dudes." And then she and Yohji and Issey and Junya play an intense game and then are all, "K, catch ya tomorrow at the black polka dotted garden with Yayoi."

3. Vivienne Westwood on Jonathan Ross
Love of my life! I pretty much bought the new issue of Dazed because of her interview with James Lovelock.
Watch it and learn all you will ever need to know, ever.

EDIT: When I wrote this I tried to find the Miu Miu AW09 ad campaign I'd
seen in print but couldn't until this morning! How perfect is it? Normally I think it's weirdly cheesy and too myspace-y when all of the photo is black and white except for one color but it just looks really awesomely cold here with the nude.
